How to Handle an Obstinate Teenager with Love and Care
The teen years can be very challenging both for the parent as well as the child. This is the time when it is natural for the teenager to defy authority. This may be extreme in some cases. These oppositional teenagers try and argue and defy you but they challenge the authority of their teachers, relatives and so on.
It is very difficult to communicate with such a child, but your patience and persistent effort on your part can change your teenager into a beautiful human being.
Whenever as a parent you are making house rules, be sure to have logic in them. If your teenager questions your rules, then you can explain the logic behind it. Try to encourage your child in taking part in his or her hobbies, attend social functions and so on.
Try to bond with your child but in doing so you must keep a certain barrier between the two of you. After all you are the parent, not his or her friend. You will see that no matter how much you try to communicate with your obstinate child you are unable to connect with your child.
You will start questioning yourself regarding where you went wrong. They reject you because deep down in their minds they think that if you give advice you are treating them like little kids.
Instead of telling your child what to do, start treating your child as an individual. Respect their ideas and views of life because they are now a separate human being. Listen to your teenager and try to solve his or her problems when they come for help.
This is the time when your teenager needs your love and support because even if they make a mistake at the end of the day, they know that you care and are ready to help them. As a parent you need to be beside your child whenever they need your help. Try not to scream, yell or show temper.
It is a sign of immature behavior. Do not fall into the trap of your child and try to be a rational thinking parent. If you shout your oppositional teen is going to take advantage of the situation. Teenagers reply on the advice of friends and as a result they learn most of the vital things from most of their mistakes.
