Parenting Tips – Parent Teacher Conference

Parent teacher conferences are an important part of your child’s life. This is the way that you get to know how your child behaves in school, how he or she reacts and what the child’s performance level is.

Often parents get criticized at these conferences and they don’t really take that very well. Parent teacher conferences are usually made to help the student learn his mistakes and they tell the parents how they can improve upon their parenting methods.

Here are a few tips on handling these conferences:

First of all you must make sure that you take any sort of criticism very seriously. It might not be very pretty to hear but then you really need to keep in mind that the reason the teacher criticizes is to make sure that your child does better. Hence you need to listen to everything the teacher says even if you don’t agree with it.

If you have an opinion about anything the teacher says you should be very polite if you want to get it across. If you are rude then it might just have after affects on the child as the teacher might be harder on him. Make sure that you make yourself heard but don’t do it rashly or in an angry way.

You should keep in mind that the teacher is probably right and at home you can try and implement whatever the teacher says. After all, teachers spend a lot of time with your children so they will know them as well as you do. If the teacher says that your child misbehaves in school then you should probably talk to your child and try and correct this mistake. After all, you wouldn’t want a child who has bad manners in front of other people.

Finally, a lot of parents try and avoid parent teacher nights because they are scared that they will get criticized by the teachers. You should be brave enough to face this. You might not like it, but it is polite for you to turn up. You will have to know about how your child is doing and you will need to correct things if your child is not right. Hence instead of avoiding it, you should face it and you should try and improve your child so that next time you get no complaints.

The most common example can be expecting your kids to excel in both academics and extracurricular activities. It is true that no parent wants to see his/her kid failing or even lagging behind but you should keep in mind that every child is not equal. You can never expect your child to perform in the same magnitude as that of his/her classmate. Never try to seep in your ambitions into your child. Find out what interests him and get him into his area of interest.

When we talk of problems created by children for parents the most common one has to be throwing tantrums. However this is actually a reflection of your behaviour at home.
