Aside from the Bingo Hall’s caretakers, cleaners and building staff, there are three main people involved in making Bingo Hall Bingo happen. The first, and perhaps most recognizable, of these team members is the caller. The charisma and talent of the caller can make or break a Bingo experience. Calling Bingo requires a special kind of rhythm and skill that not everyone possesses. In fact, these skills are so distinct that there’s actually a National Bingo Caller of the Year Award that’s given away in the UK!
It is the caller’s job to introduce the game, the pattern at play, and the prize. The caller then randomly selects the numbers of the game. In modern Bingo Halls, this is done through a Random Number Generator (RNG). In traditional Halls, this is done with a ball-and-cage machine. Once the Bingo numbers are selected, the caller then announces the numbers to the players. It’s important that callers be clear and concise when calling numbers – when large pots are at stake, mumbling can make a caller very unpopular!
Spotters are those folks who approach you when you’ve called Bingo. Their job is to bring you and your winning card to the caller to check to see if you have Bingo. If you’ve got a winning card, the spotter will lead you to the cashier. The cashier not only collects the money at the start of the game, they also distribute the winnings.
