UK Bingo Players Play For Breast Cancer Awareness

Bingo for Breakthrough brings together bingo clubs throughout the UK for one week of fundraising during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer awareness is a big issue and for the fifth year in a row UK bingo players will be able to once again play bingo in fundraising games for this cause. The Breakthrough Breast Cancer and the Bingo Association have received community service awards for their work towards raising money for breast cancer awareness and the annual fundraising week has really helped boost morale among UK bingo club employees, players, and the community at large.

The amount of money the Bingo Association has raised since the launch of the partnership is staggering with over 3 million going towards breast cancer awareness and research. Over 420 UK bingo clubs and halls participate in this week long event every October. The 2008 event will be held from October 19 through 25. Bingo players at these traditional UK bingo halls have the chance to win prizes such as pink stuffed animals in return for their fee being donated to Breakthrough Breast Cancer. The bingo halls employees will host a wide variety of activities in addition to just bingo that week and past events have included bed pushes, ‘X-Factor’ competitions, and sponsored sky dives. Players can also purchase pink ribbon dabber that week, the proceeds which go to the charity.

85% of UK bingo players are women and this week long fundraising activity is a great way to get the word out about breast cancer, including the importance of yearly check-ups, what cancer can do to the body, strides being taken towards finding a cure, and information on support groups and options. Information is given to the staff of the UK bingo halls that participate so that they can help get the message spread and raise awareness among the women who play bingo. It is also a cause the male players get involved in, especially if their own lives have been touched by breast cancer in their family.

For more information about Breakthrough Breast Cancer and how you can get involved both in the UK bingo halls and through other fundraising activities, contact Paul Glazier at 020 7025 2493 or email him at paulg@breakthrough.org.uk. Help fight breast cancer and help get the word out while having fun at the same time. Visit your local UK bingo hall or club in October and do your part to stop this disease before it can take one of your loved ones.
